It's a euphoric moment for Club América as they are crowned champions once again in Liga MX, this time securing the title for the Clausura 2024 campaign. This marks a huge achievement as the team wins back to back league titles, making it a successful soccer calendar year. The season was not perfect, as the team missed out on the Concacaf Champions Cup final. However, América will feel they still made their fans proud. With their ups and downs throughout the season this team has etched their name in history, conquering the 14th and 15th league titles, cementing Club América’s stature as the biggest and most winning team in Mexico.

Club América Crowned Back to Back Champions

Setting the Bar High Winning the 14th

The start of the 2024 season had a tall task ahead for Club América. The team had just crowned themselves champions weeks prior to the start of the new year in the Apertura 2023 campaign. This season marked a historical achievement for América, who not onlh won their 14th league title but also did so by being the best offensive and defensive team in the league. They impressively secured 40 points at the top of the table and steamrolled past their opponents in the playoffs.

The bar was set high and expectations as always were to win the league and this time add the Concacaf Champions Cup trophy as well. A tough task for any team, but one that seemed achievable seeing as how the club was able to retain the majority of the winning squad. A strong starting eleven, plus a depth-filled squad, played a crucial role in leading América to glory.

Failure in Champions Cup Tournament

While Club América ended the soccer calendar year on a high with plenty of silverware, the team will no doubt still have regrets about their Champions Cup exit. The team was poised to make a great run in the tournament, but their efforts were foiled by Pachuca in the semifinals. A failure that undoubtedly taints their season and leaves a void that will undoubtedly grow come 2025 when the FIFA Club World Cup takes place. An event Club América desperately wanted to be a part of but won’t participate in.

Throughout the tournament, América showed true prowess, tearing teams apart. Scoring goals and looking defensively sharp, the team seemed unstoppable. Then they came up against Pachuca a team that always complicates life for América in knockout competitions. A perfect storm of tired legs, a fatigued mentality, and a tactically disciplined young team caused the team’s exit from the competition.

Bicampeonato: Winning Running on Fumes

The Clausura 2024 season was filled with a lot of emotion and thrilling games. A season that truly tested the limit of the team and coaching staff. With schedule congestion, short rest periods and balancing two competitions along the way, América’s achievement of winning the league is made that much more impressive. As the season progressed, the team eventually faded due to the tired legs, but still, they managed to clinch first place in the league standings.

The playoffs saw América stumble their way through into the final. The team was playing below their expectations and winning by the minimum of margins. Nevertheless, the team found themselves in yet another final with the opportunity to achieve their principal goal. Even though they were running on fumes, América managed to survive Cruz Azul’s attacks and nick a game-winning goal in the second leg of the final. Crowning themselves champions in their home stadium in front of their fans. A victory that was neither pretty nor fun to watch, but nevertheless a victory that cements the team in the history of Liga MX.

Club América Champions of Champions

Not only did Club América crown themselves back-to-back champions, but by doing so, they automatically secured the Campeón de Campeones trophy. This prestigious title, awarded to the winner between the Apertura and Clausura champions, highlights América’s dominance in Mexican football. Their achievement eliminates the need for the usual summer competition to determine the Campeón de Campeones.

Instead, this summer’s event at Dignity Health Sports Park has been changed to the Supercopa MX. Club América will face off against Tigres for this trophy on June 30th. This match promises to be a thrilling encounter, as América looks to add yet another title to their impressive collection, further solidifying their legacy as Mexico’s most successful club.
